The Expedition & Detonation Mechanic in Path of Exile 2 is a critical part of the endgame content, combining strategic placement of explosives with timed detonations to Path of exile currency trigger powerful encounters and rewards. Here's a breakdown of how the mechanic works:
1. Finding an Expedition
Expedition events are marked on the Atlas map with an ethereal light blue icon resembling a spiral. These nodes indicate areas where you can start an Expedition when you enter the corresponding map.
Once you enter the map and explore, you’ll find an area marked with Markers and a tent featuring one of four NPCs who will explain the basics of the Expedition mechanics. You will also see a Detonator in the center of the area.
2. The Role of Explosives
The goal of the Expedition is to strategically place Explosives on the map to interact with different types of markers, which will then trigger specific outcomes.
Runic Monsters are spawned when you detonate explosives near Red Markers. The larger the marker, the bigger the Runic Monster pack. These monsters will be empowered by Unearthed Remnants.
Unearthed Remnants are indicated by a tooltip above a relic on the ground. They offer modifiers that either benefit or negatively impact the event, such as increased damage for monsters or increased rarity of items from Excavated Chests.
Excavated Chests are triggered by explosives placed near Black Markers with the spiral symbol. These chests contain valuable event-specific rewards, such as Path of exile currency for sale Artifacts, Logbooks, Currencies, Waystones, and endgame gear.
