Some of these numbers are quite surprising, as two of the games that received very high reviews from the industry, EA FC 24 Coins as well as great reception from fans are not even in the top 5 best-sellers for 2022. God of War, which sits at number 7. received the highest reviews that any PlayStation 4 exclusive ever received in history, and it was even named Game of the Year award at The Game Awards this year. Similarly, Marvel's Spider Man topped the download charts various times, but did not make the top 5 of this list.
It is no surprise that Red Dead Redemption 2 snatched number one on the chart, as it is a game that went beyond the expectations of fans and critics and was played by many console owners this year. It is surprising though that Fallout 76. which was met with a lot of criticism and controversy, and Battlefield V, which many fans felt was quite disappointing, are sitting at third and fourth place on the chart.
The best-sellers for other PlayStation platforms include Fortnite Battle Royale as the most-downloaded free-to-play game, and Beat Saber as the best-selling PlayStation VR game. Overall, it was definitely a good year for PlayStation and next year also anticipates to be a great year for PS4 owners, with big exclusives such as The Last of Us Part 2 and Death Stranding sitting on the horizon.
EA Sports FC 19 launched to some solid reviews, but not without controversy. Currently, the publisher behind the soccer simulator, EA Sports, is considering replacing Cristiano Ronaldo as the game's cover athlete after rape allegations have been made. Kathryn Mayorga has accused the athlete of raping her while in Las Vegas in 2009. At the time of this writing, Ronaldo is still the cover star, as he denies the allegation.
In fact, not only did Ronaldo refer to her accusation as "fake news," but his attorneys have threatened to sue the German magazine Der Spiegel for publishing her claims in a "blatantly illegal" manner. Although the EA Sports FC 19 cover star is denying the accusation, a spokesperson for EA revealed they are monitoring the situation: "We have seen the concerning report that details allegations against Cristiano Ronaldo. We are closely monitoring the situation, as we expect cover athletes and ambassadors to conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with EA's values."
Furthermore, FC 24 Coins the retail giant Nike also has a contract with Ronaldo, and the company revealed on Thursday that it was "deeply concerned" by the situation and plans to monitor it as well. It's also worth mentioning that the Portugal national team did not list Ronaldo on its roster for games later this month when it revealed its roster Thursday.
